If theres something I can not live without, its Lip Balm.
In fact I would happily ditch all beauty products and only take a lip balm to a dessert island with me, because sore lips make me miserable..
So going back 15 years I went through what I like to refer to as my “Vaseline phase” as a teen I religiously applied Vaseline to my lips multiple times a day, if I forgot to take it to school even for 1 day, by the time I got home my lips were red raw, extremely sore and flaky, nice.
It wasn’t until I did a bit of research that I found out that Vaseline isn’t really all that beneficial for your lips, in fact its just neat petroleum in fancy packaging thats really just useful as a barrier rather than a moisturiser – it can actually contribute to drying out lips by creating a false sense or “feeling” of skin comfort and hydration while in fact it does nothing to nurture, heal or restore natural moisture to the skin.
It was then I finally found Carmex, Burt Bees, Palmers Coca lip balm, so on and so on, and the rest is history. I am now quite the connoisseur and collector of lip balms, there are always a handful in the bottom of my handbag, on my desk and by my bedside, and so I thought I would share a few favourites which are always on hand..
So here are my top 10.
Good’ol Carmex, I remember purchasing this for the first time at Boots, and after initially using it I noticed I didn’t have to apply as often as Vaseline. Once me and my lips were on good terms again – I could go days without using any at all.
Salicylic acid helps exfoliate the lips to help make them smooth whilst Lanolin helps retain moisture and coco Butter help moisturise.
Its a great price, its readily available and it comes in a durable plastic pot with a metal lid, its not ideal for carrying in your pocket but hand chucked in a handbag, they also do the same formula in a squeezy tube if your on the go.
Petrolatum, Lanolin, Cetyl Esters, Paraffin, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter, Cera Alba, Camphor, Menthol, Salicylic Acid, Vanillin, Parfum, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol.
This is one of my current favourites which I smear on every night before bed – in a hope that I will have luscious moisturised lips in the morning. Generally this lip balm works very well, and due to the fact that its so thick I definitely still feel a residue on my lips when I wake-up. It comes in a lovely little glass pot, and they now do a stick form if you are on the go!
This lip balm does not contain Petroleum, but instead has a whole concoction of natural oils like Shea butter, Sweet Almond, grapefruit peel oil, Soybean oil and so on, no wonder my lips feel so moisturised afterwards.
This balm is slightly more expensive at around £9.50 but well worth it.
Contains at least 79.5 % of natural origin ingredients. No parabens.Ingredients : Cera Alba/beeswax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Olus Oil/vegetable Oil, Lecithin, Behenoxy Dimethicone, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Mel/honey, Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Caprylic/capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Rosa Moschata Seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Candelilla Cera/euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Allantoin, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Bht, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Citric Acid, Limonene, Citral, Linalool, Geraniol [n0802/d].
Ahhhh this one feels like a little piece of luxury every time I use it.. technically not a lip balm, but not a lip gloss either, it definitely contains skincare to nurture your lips. I have a few different shades (05, 09) It comes in a pretty squeeze tube with a doe-foot applicator, topped off with an elegant a gold lid.
I love this lip perfector when I can’t be bothered to wear a lipstick, but want a touch of colour. The formula isn’t sticky at all, I would probably reapply this every hour or two, as it doesn’t hang around for that long. But it is very nice to use – so I don’t mind re-applying too much.
The ingredients list baffles me so I won’t pretend to understand any of the ingredients, but I did spot shea butter which will moisturise.
Paraffinum Liquidum/Mineral Oil, Diisostearyl Malate, Hydrogenated Styrene/Isoprene Copolymer, Ozokerite, Dipentaerythrityl Tetrahydroxystearate/Tetraisostearate, Polyethylene, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Unsaponifiables, Irvingia Gabonensis Kernel Butter, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Parfum/Fragrance, Silica Dimethyl Silyate, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Oryzanol, Tribehenin, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Cetyl Peg/Ppg-10/1 Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hexyl Laurate, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Sorbitan Isostearate, Retinyl Palmitate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Tocopherol, Bht
Although I love the original formula, I thought I would pick up the Pomegranate version as it had the addition of pomegranate oil, and I’m not disappointed. Burt’s Bees quite obviously has beeswax as its main featured ingredient, but I can also see lots of other great natural goodness in the ingredients list.
Importantly though, it makes my lips smooth, leaves them matt, non sticky, and hangs around for quite a while keeping my lips protected and moisturised, its also sold everywhere and is relatively cheap.
Featured Ingredient; Pomegranate Oil – Pomegranate fruit extract, from the tree Punica granatum, contains several polyphenols and anthocyanidins which are highly antioxidant, protecting hair and skin.
Ingredients: helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, aroma (flavor), punica granatum (pomegranate) oil, tocopherol, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil (huile de colza), carmine, benzyl salicylate, cinnamal, citral, eugenol, geraniol, hydroxycitronellal, limonene, linalool
5. EOS – Smooth Stick Lip Balm
Proclaimed to be “95% organic, 100% natural, and paraben and petrolatum free. Packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, soothing shea butter and jojoba oil, eos keeps your lips moist, soft and sensationally smooth” which I would tend to agree with wholeheartedly. I will admit that I first saw Miley Cyrus on Instagram with this lip balm so I went straight online and ordered it.. don’t judge.
Infact I ordered a set with a few different flavours, the plain Vanilla obviously being my favourite. I love the fact that it has so many oils, and is 100% natural, its also cruelty free and not tested animals which is a massive win in my books.
Unfortunately I could only find my “Summer fruits” version to photograph.

I originally had this is a round tube, but it now comes in an oval shape which is easier for tight jean pockets .. just remember to take them out before you chuck them in the washing machine.
Containing Vitamin E and SPF 15, this balm is matt and great for chucking on before lipstick, its has a lovely faint coca smell which is not overpowering at all.
Its so affordable and really does the trick when I go skiing as it leaves a waxy balm which sits on top of my lips and really protects against the cold wind and the SPF is great for the extreme sun which you get up the mountains.
Active ingredients: Octyl Methoxycinnamate 7.5%, Oxybenzone 4.5%, Dimenthicone 1.5%. An extremely indulgent, multi-purpose balm highly regarded by hordes of beauty editors, bloggers and A-list celebs. Its described as a treatment, which is brimming with rose flower essential wax, shea butter, vitamin E, SPF 15 and “strengthening ceramides” to encourage cellular regeneration.
I have used this balm on my cuticles and even stubborn patches of dry skin.
No only is the packaging a beautiful addition to a dressing table, the product itself leaves you with moisturised, plump, supple lips. I like to use this one before bed to get the most out of it.

I first played my hands on this when I was on a flight, I really needed a lip balm, and this one came as a set along with the other 8 Hour products (which FYI are definitely worth trying) I loved that once I had applied this balm a couple of times, I really noticed an improvement and my lips were comfortably moisturised again.
It was really there for me when I needed it, and I have had a back up handy ever since.

Another “multi purpose balm” its a shame that this one is quite petrolatum heavy, its featured ingredient is the Paw Paw and also Manuka Honey.
Paw Paw aka Papaya fruit, contains antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C and flavonoids: the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium, copper and magnesium.
Manuka Honey is a form of monofloral honey that is produced by bees that feed on the flowers of the manuka plant aka Tea tree, giving this lip balm the antibacterial properties of honey.
Now I can’t find any percentages on any ingredients lists, so I’m not sure how much PawPaw or Manuka this balm contains, but it definitely smells like Vaseline/Petroleum.
This balm is great for elbows, knees and general dry skin, Its thicker than vaseline, and not a shiny once applies, I do use it on my lips, but not as much as the other balms out there – I just think its great as a multi purpose product as a protective and healing balm, rather than a moisturiser, its great for traveling with.
Pharmaceutical Grade Petrolatum, Carica Papaya (paw paw) fruit extract, Bees Wax, Bio Active Manuka Honey 20+, Potassium Sorbate.
